MUMBAI – The Nifty Pharma index is expected to rise next week, supported by factors ranging from defensive buying to strong domestic performance in the June quarter. While stocks of US-focused companies may remain under selling pressure, contract development and manufacturing companies are expected to have upside potential and will likely rise more next week. Contract manufacturing companies have reported strong growth in the June quarter, which is not a seasonally strong quarter. Relative immunity from US President Donald Trump's threat to impose large tariffs on generic products is also playing in their favour.
This week, the Nifty Pharma index ended almost flat from last week at 26541.80 points. Contract development and manufacturing organisations had a great run this week, with shares of Piramal Pharma, Gland Pharma, and Sai Life Sciences ending 4-7% higher. With Wockhardt and Laurus Labs yet to report their June quarter earnings, analysts said CDMO stocks could see a positive ripple effect if these companies post strong earnings. Torrent Pharmaceuticals, Alkem Laboratories, and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries ended 2–4% lower and were a major drag on the Nifty Pharma index.
Lupin's shares will likely be under pressure in the near term after the company's management signalled a strong decline in quarterly revenues from the US in upcoming quarters. Despite higher-than-expected revenues for the June quarter, the company's shares ended almost 1% lower Friday, primarily due to subpar US sales growth. The company expects to take the bulk of the price erosion impact on Tolvaptan and mirabegron generics in the coming quarters. Its management said Lupin will likely report quarterly revenue ranging between $250 million and $280 million from the US for the next few quarters, significantly lower than its June quarter revenue of $366 million.
The Nifty Pharma index is moving upward in a higher-highs and higher-lows formation above its key long-term as well as short-term moving averages, Vipin Kumar, assistant vice president – research at Globe Capital Market said. "Considering its current chart structure, we suggest that traders continue with a buy-on-dips trading approach as long as the index holds above the 25400 spot level on a closing basis," he said. A dip from the 26000–25800 spot zone should be taken as a fresh buying opportunity, Kumar suggested. He expects the index to face resistance at 26800–27200 levels and find support around 26150–25800 points.
