MUMBAI – Carborundum Universal Ltd. reported a year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit for the quarter ending June, driven by strong top-line revenue growth. The company reported sales growth, with all three of its primary business segments--ceramics, abrasives, and electrominerals--recording sales higher than in the year-ago quarter.
The materials sciences engineering solutions provider reported a consolidated net profit of INR 764 million for the June quarter, up over 23% on year from INR 618.9 million. Analysts had expected the company's net profit to be between INR 666 million and INR 809 million.
The company's revenue from operations for the June quarter increased 17% on year to INR 14.27 billion. Analysts had expected the company's consolidated net sales to be between INR 12.73 billion and INR 13.07 billion. Sequentially, the company's revenue from operations rose 2% from INR 13.98 billion.
The company's total expenses in the quarter were INR 13.63 billion, up over 17% on year. The cost of materials consumed rose 7% on year to INR 4.94 billion. Employee benefit expenses rose 13% on year to INR 2.68 billion and power and fuel expenses rose 17% to INR 1.43 billion. The other expenses of the company rose 6% on year to INR 3.04 billion.
Shares of Carborundum Universal fell over 2% to INR 1070 on the National Stock Exchange after the company announced its June quarter earnings during market hours. The stock recovered to close at INR 1097 apiece, up 2.6% from Thursday.
The abrasives segment was the largest contributor to Carborundum Universal's revenues, with sales up over 20% on year at INR 6.09 billion. Revenues from the ceramic segment rose 16.5% on year to INR 3.49 billion. The electrominerals segment recorded 16.8% revenue growth at INR 4.73 billion. The segments' total revenues rose 17% on year to INR 14.67 billion and profit rose 50% to INR 1.33 billion. End
