MUMBAI – A sharper fall in revenue compared to costs dragged down Afcons Infrastructure Ltd.'s bottom line for the June quarter. The engineering and construction company reported weaker-than-expected earnings for the quarter, with both top and bottom line falling below analysts' expectations.
The company's consolidated net profit for the June quarter declined around 78% on year to INR 306 million. This was sharply lower than the INR 863.20 million estimated by the Street. The company had posted a loss of INR 884 million in the trailing quarter.
The company's consolidated revenue for the reporting quarter declined nearly 21% on year to INR 26.71 billion. This was also below the INR 29.35 billion estimated by the Street. Sequentially, the top line was up over 2%.
Afcons reported total expenses of INR 26.76 billion, down 17% on year and down 6% sequentially. The company's cost of construction declined over 15% on year to INR 13 billion. Cost of materials consumed fell 15% to INR 5.77 billion and employee benefit expenses fell 20% to INR 3.03 billion. The other expenses were down 30% at INR 2.39 billion.
The company's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation was down 41% on year at INR 2.63 billion. The EBITDA margin contracted sharply to 9.6% from 13% in the year-ago quarter. The operating margin declined to 7.75% from 11.75%.
During the June quarter, Afcons received orders worth INR 132.19 billion, taking its pending order book to INR 432.90 billion as of Jun. 30. The company's book-to-bill ratio was at 3.8 times.
"The quarter was marked by some marquee project wins, including the Croatia rail project and the Vadhavan Port breakwater package, reflecting our strong technical capabilities and improving momentum in project awards," Subramanian Krishnamurthy, executive chairman of the company, said in a press release.
India's tallest road cable-stayed bridge on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway "Missing Link Project", executed by Afcons, was inaugurated May 1, the company said in the press release. Friday, its shares ended at INR 274.25 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, down 1.6% from Thursday. The company's earnings were released after market hours. End
