India Friday rainfall 8% below normal, season's deficit at 11%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 8.6 millimetres of rain Friday, 8% below the normal of 9.4 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Aug. 7, the country received 451.9 millimetres of rain, 11% below the normal of 509.6 millimetres for the period.
Of the four homogeneous regions of the country, east and northeast India, and central India received "deficient" rains Friday. Northwest India registered "normal" rains and south India received "excess" rains.
East and northeast India received 7.7 millimetres of rain, 26% below normal. South India received 31% above-normal rainfall at 8.4 millimetres, and northwest India recorded 8.7 millimetres of rainfall, 14% above normal. Central India recorded 9.3 millimetres of rainfall Friday, 25% below normal.
Andaman & Nicobar Islands received the highest rainfall at 40 millimetres, followed by Kerala and Mahe at 32.6 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data. Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large excess" in eight, "excess" in eight, "normal" in three, "deficient" in 10, and "large deficient" in six, according to the data. End
