NEW DELHI – The coming week will start with June-quarter earnings announcement by Vodafone Idea Ltd., which would likely trigger some stock-specific movement. Besides that, analysts expect stocks of telecommunications companies to stay steady in the near term.

Vodafone Idea is expected to turn a consolidated net loss of INR 54.06 billion for the June quarter compared with a net profit of INR 519.70 billion for the March quarter, according to the average of estimates from seven brokerages. However, in the absence of the one-time income of INR 574.91 billion reported for the March quarter, the company would have posted a consolidated net loss of around INR 55 billion. Going by this, the company is expected to showcase improved performance for the June quarter. The telecom players' consolidated revenue is expected to rise marginally on a sequential basis to INR 114.64 billion for the reporting quarter from INR 113.32 billion for the March quarter, as per the average of estimates. Market participants await management commentary on the progress tied to the company's INR-450-billion turnaround plan.

This week, India's second largest telecom company by subscriber base Bharti Airtel Ltd. said it will continue to step up investments into the Africa business, which is expected to punch above its weight over time. The telecom major sees a significant long-term opportunity in the Africa market given the favorable demographics, low digital penetration, and rising demand for connectivity, financial inclusion, and digital infrastructure. The company also said there were several benefits from the foray of subsidiary Indus Towers Ltd. into the Africa market. On a broader level, a majority of Bharti Airtel's capital expenditure is directed towards building transport infrastructure.

Next week, the BSE Telecommunication index is expected to find initial support at 3480 points and face resistance at 3660 points, according to Ganesh Angaj, head technical analyst at NVS Brokerage Pvt. Ltd. Beyond these levels, Angaj anticipates support and resistance at 3400 points and 3720 points, respectively.

Friday, the key sectoral index ended 0.4% higher at 3592.19 points with nearly half the index constituents ending the day in the red.
