MUMBAI – A poor earnings performance by some fast-moving consumer goods companies are likely to keep the momentum in these stocks subdued, keeping the Nifty FMCG index in a consolidated phase, analysts said. Market participants continue to maintain their view of rangebound movement of FMCG stocks in the week to follow. Some companies managed to beat the Street's view on June quarter earnings, which will prevent these stocks from falling sharply.
Among the major news developments in the sector, shares of Dabur India were in focus after the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India strengthened enforcement of product claims and labelling norms across FMCG, beverage, and alcoholic beverages. FSSAI had banned the use of 100% claims, stating that such declarations are ambiguous, unverifiable, and potentially misleading to consumers.
Post the recent FSSAI order, Dabur said that it has already begun implementing the required label changes and stated that there were no adverse quality remarks from the authority.
Friday, the Delhi High Court stayed the authority's order banning Dabur from selling food products carrying claims such as "100% Pure," "100% Natural," "100% Purity Guaranteed" and "100% Organic" till the next date of hearing on Aug. 24.
"We expect the broader regulatory push is likely to increase compliance requirements and encourage more substantiated marketing claims across the sector," Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers said in a report.
Going ahead, earnings of Page Industries and Bata India are scheduled to be disclosed next week. Friday, the Nifty FMCG index closed 0.1% higher at 49435.20 points. On week, the sectoral index was up 0.6%, sharply higehr than the benchmark Nifty 50 and Nifty 200 indices, which closed 0.8% and 0.9% lower, respectively. The Nifty FMCG index is expected to face resistance at 50550-51000 points and find support at 48600-48000 points, Vipin Kumar assistant vice president of research at Globe Capital Market, said.
