NEW DELHI – India's foreign exchange reserves jumped to a 12-week high of $692.87 billion as of Jul. 31, data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday showed. The reserves rose by INR 10.51 billion on week, the sharpest rise since the week ended Jan. 30. The growth in the foreign exchange reserves was mainly on the back of an increase in foreign currency assets.

The RBI's step to boost foreign capital inflows also helped the reserves to rise. Indian banks attracted $40.82 billion as foreign capital inflows from Jun. 8 till Jul. 31.

The rupee appreciated over 1% against the dollar in the week ended Jul. 31 with the central bank's continuous dollar sales and supported by a fall in the crude oil prices, according to dealers. Foreign currency assets jumped $8.75 billion from a week ago to $564.68 billion as of Jul. 31. The value of the central bank's gold holdings rose by $1.69 billion on week to $104.74 billion.

Calculated in dollar terms, the RBI's foreign exchange reserves also reflect the impact of the appreciation or depreciation of currencies other than the dollar, such as the euro, the pound sterling, and the yen held by the central bank.  End
