MUMBAI – The sharp divergence between the closing levels of the two headline indices persisted for the fifth session Friday after the new system to discover the prices was introduced. The closing auction session was introduced for derivatives-eligible stocks to bring in better price discovery, replacing the old volume-weighted average price. The new system has left market participants puzzled as instances of last-moment spikes and volatility have continued. These discrepancies are being attributed to thin liquidity and supply-demand mismatch.
Friday, the Nifty 50 ended at 24570.65 points, down 65.35 points or 0.3%. The disparity between the level of the 50-stock index at the end of continuous trading and the actual close has come down substantially. Monday, the difference was a shade above 200 points. Friday, it was around 14 points. The BSE Sensex settled at 78499.17, down 455.39 points or 0.6%. On week, the indices rose 0.5-0.8%. The disparity between the two headline indices has continued, with their percentage rise or fall being different since Monday.
Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Auto rose around 2% to be the top performer. This came on the back of a rise of around 8% in Samvardhana Motherson International. The stock rose after the company said it aspires to hive off some of its emerging businesses and list them separately in the next five years as it wants them to "stand on their own feet", fund their own capital expenditure, and build their own futures. All the other constituents also rose, with Exide Industries, Sona BLW Precision Forgings, and Hero MotoCorp up 3%.
Financial services stocks fell the most among the Nifty 50 constituents after the Reserve Bank of India proposed that non-banking financial companies should offer only term loan products and not provide revolving credit facilities. Revolving credit refers to any fund-based credit facility which does not meet the definition of a term loan. However, it added that these restrictions would not apply to non-banking financial companies authorised by the central bank to issue credit cards. The central bank has sought feedback on these draft norms by Aug. 28. Once finalised, the RBI looks to implement the directions immediately.
Bajaj Finance was hit the hardest among the Nifty 50 stocks, down nearly 6%. Bajaj Finserv, Shriram Finance, and Jio Financial Services ended 2-4% lower. Stocks outside the blue-chip index like Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co., Tata Capital, and Aditya Birla Capital ended 3-4% lower. Bank stocks also fell sharply, with the index heavyweight ICICI Bank down 2.5%. Axis Bank fell 1.4% and Kotak Mahindra Bank fell 0.8%.
Siemens Energy India topped the Nifty 200 index, ending over 12% higher. The company posted a 68% year-on-year rise in its June quarter net profit and a 39% on-year growth in sales. Samvardhana Motherson rose nearly 9%.
Blue Star, which fell nearly 4%, was also among the worst-hit stocks in the Nifty 200. The company, in a post-earnings conference call, said its order inflow was sluggish in factories, infrastructure, and commercial segments in the June quarter. It also expects elevated input costs to remain in the September quarter.
Jyoti CNC Automation was the worst-hit on the Nifty 500 index, down over 9%. Shares fell after the company's consolidated net profit for the June quarter declined 20% on year. Sapphire Foods India ended 12% higher and was the top gainer in the index.
