NEW DELHI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for four northern Kerala districts -- Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasargod -- amid forecasts of "extremely heavy" rainfall Friday. Meanwhile, the Kerala-Karnataka border districts such as Dakshina Kannada, central Karnataka districts such as Chikmagalur and Shimoga, as well as coastal Karnataka are expected to receive "heavy" to "very heavy" rainfall till Saturday, the weather department said. The department has also forecast gusty winds over parts of Karnataka and Telangana till Saturday.

 

The department also issued a red alert for "extremely heavy" rainfall over Odisha's Mayurbhanj district Friday. East India states such as Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Sikkim, and parts of West Bengal are expected to receive "heavy" to "very heavy" rainfall over the next three days. These rains are occurring under the influence of a low-pressure area formed over the coastal areas of Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, it said.

 

Meanwhile, another low-pressure area has been formed over southwest Uttar Pradesh and adjoining areas, causing "very heavy" rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi Friday, the weather department said. Under the influence of the weather system, most northwest Indian states are expected to receive "heavy" rainfall till Thursday. However, rainfall is likely to be intense or "very heavy" over Himachal Pradesh Monday and Tuesday, and over east Rajasthan till Saturday, with similar rainfall activities later Tuesday and Wednesday.

 

In central India, "very heavy" rainfall is only forecast over west Madhya Pradesh Friday. However, "heavy" rainfall is forecast over many parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh till Tuesday.

 

The weather department has not forecast "very heavy" rainfall for northeast India and west India for the next 5-6 days. These regions are only expected to receive "heavy" rainfall during the same period.  End
