NEW DELHI – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has called a meeting of all Members of Parliament representing the state, both in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, amid speculation that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government may reintroduce the contentious delimitation bill. The meeting is scheduled to take place Saturday at 1500 IST at Kalaivanar Arangam conference hall in Chennai.

According to reports, Vijay wants all Tamil Nadu MPs to speak in one voice in Parliament and has spoken to all the MPs regarding it Friday. The southern states have been opposing the formula of population-based allocation of seats to the states, as it places them at a disadvantage against the densely populated Hindi belt states of north India.

Indian National Congress Lok Sabha member from Virudhunagar Manickam Tagore appreciated the chief minister's gesture, and hoped that this tradition will continue in the future as well. "I heartily commend the chief minister for taking this commendable decision to personally call all party MPs and hold consultations without regard to party differences," Tagore wrote on X.

"To ensure that Tamil Nadu speaks with one voice in Delhi against the repression of the central BJP government, everyone must stand united for that purpose. With the respect due to MPs, may this call continue as a fine tradition!" he added.

The Opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance has been jittery after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which has 22 Lok Sabha and eight Rajya Sabha members, hinted that it may support the proposed bill with some conditions. The BJP had tried to muster a two-thirds majority in both Houses required to pass the Constitutional amendment bill. However, the Centre's attempt was defeated by a united opposition in April.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also met the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi Wednesday. According to media reports, the delimitation bill was also discussed, among other things, during the 50-minute meeting.  End
