NEW DELHI – India needs a strong component manufacturing ecosystem for medical devices to move beyond the domestic market and compete with imports, Manoj Joshi, secretary of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, said a keynote address at the India Medical Device Conference, hosted by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Friday. "...Far more development of component industry is what is required if you want to cater to the global market and not to a limited Indian market," he said.

 

Joshi stressed that Indian medical device manufacturers need to improve the quality of their offerings to cater to the global market. He said there are concerns about the quality and regulation of products at the lower end. He explained that while manufacturing any industrial product for a small market, it is  difficult to compete on quality and cost with imports. Further, given the high priority of the healthcare sector, the government has imposed low import duties. "You need to produce for a much larger market than Indian market so that your cost could go down, you have money to do a product development, you have money for branding, you have money for getting regulatory approvals around the world, you have a marketing reach to sell the product around the world," the secretary said.

 

Most companies in India need to shift their strategy from producing only for India as import substitution and move to a strategy of catering to the global market, which would require strong component manufacturing facilities and the entire ecosystem that is currently lacking, he said.

 

Joshi said it is during health emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic that the need for more domestic manufacturing is felt, which is why the government sees the medical devices sector and drug production as categories wherein India should be producing some things, if not everything, substantially. This is why the government gives higher importance to medical devices than any other industrial product, he added.

 

Joshi said several startups have emerged in the medical device manufacturing space, but they find it challenging to sell their products. He suggested a partnership between the larger industry and these startups, which can provide a market for the latter.  End
