Equity Alert: US markets end lower, investors assess peace talks, earnings
MUMBAI--0700 IST--Major US indices ended lower Thursday as investors weighed on a new set of earnings and the progress in the US and Iran peace deal. The Dow Jones Industrial Average snapped its five-session winning run and closed around 1% lower. The Nasdaq Composite fell for the second session in a row and the S&P 500 for the third straight session.
Technology heavyweights Alphabet, Amazon, and Nvidia fell. Alphabet closed 1% lower while Nvidia and Amazon both closed slightly lower. Meanwhile, shares of Microsoft and Apple closed higher. Microsoft closed 2.5% higher and the iPhone maker closed marginally higher. Artificial intelligence company SpaceX closed 6% higher. Shares of data storage company Western Digital fell around 13?spite reporting a strong set of earnings. Concern about spending on AI infrastructure dragged down the stock and chipmaker Sandisk extended its losses from Wednesday and closed around 7% lower.
During the extended trading, shares of Airbnb rose more than 7?ter the holiday rental company reported higher than estimated top line and bottom lines. DraftKings fell around 3?ter the company's revenues fell short of the Street's expectations.
On the macroeconomic front, investors await the jobs report due on Friday. July's nonfarm payrolls are expected to show less improvement while the unemployment rate is likely to remain unchanged at 4.2%, according to a Reuters poll.
