Water storage in key reservoirs at 96.97 bcm as of Thu, down 27% on year

MUMBAI – Water storage in 166 key reservoirs across the country was at 96.97 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, down 27% from 132.37 bcm a year ago, according to data from the Central Water Commission. The current storage accounted for 52.8% of total live storage capacity and was nearly 3% below the average storage over the past 10 years, the data showed.
In the northern region, which has 11 reservoirs, the total live storage capacity was 9.08 bcm or 45.8% of total live storage capacity. This was sharply lower than the 70.4% of the live storage capacity a year earlier. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
Reservoirs in the eastern region held 10.27 bcm or 47.2% of total live storage capacity. Last year, the total live storage capacity of the 27 reservoirs in the region was at 55.0%. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.
Reservoirs in the western region, which includes Goa, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, held 28.90 bcm or 75.9% of total live storage capacity in 53 reservoirs in the region. This was marginally higher than 73.8% of the live storage capacity a year earlier.
In the central region, which includes Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the 28 reservoirs in the region held 23.02 bcm or 47.4% of total live storage capacity. This was below the 72.5% of live storage capacity a year earlier.
The water level in the southern region was 25.69 bcm, or 46.5% of total live capacity in 47 reservoirs in the region. The region includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. At this time last year, the water level was 78.0% of the total live storage capacity. End
