MUMBAI – Apollo Tyres Ltd.'s June quarter net profit jumped 27 times on year, largely due to a one-time gain and low base of the year-ago quarter. The tyre manufacturer reported INR 3.49 billion in consolidated net profit, compared to INR 129 million a year ago. Analysts had estimated a bottom line of INR 2.4 billion.
The company's revenue from operations was INR 73.98 billion, up 13% on year from INR 65.61 billion. Brokerages had estimated the company would earn INR 75.49 billion in revenues. Other income more than tripled to INR 583 million.
The company's total expenses rose 13.6% on year to INR 70 billion. Cost of materials consumed grew 25% to INR 40.89 billion, taking up 58% of total expenses. Its other expenses, the second-largest item, grew 16% on year to INR 13.45 billion. However, the company's finance costs fell 9% to INR 915 million. Its purchase of stock-in-trade also dropped 15% to INR 5.51 billion.
In the June quarter, Apollo Tyres had a one-time gain of INR 235.36 million, supporting its profit margin. Notably, the company had to make a one-time payment of INR 3.7 billion in the year-ago quarter, which had dragged its bottom line down.
Sales from the company's business in the Asia-Pacific, West Asia, and Africa regions grew 14% to INR 55.3 billion. Its revenues from the European business grew 10% to INR 20.4 billion. The company's operating margin in the June quarter contracted 150 basis points to 11.73%.
Apollo Tyres reported its earnings for the June quarter after market hours Thursday. Its shares ended at INR 449.70 on the National Stock Exchange, up 1.08% from Wednesday. End
