Cabinet nod to 136-km Guwahati-Tezpur access-controlled stretch on NH-15

NEW DELHI – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs Thursday approved the construction of a four-lane access-controlled 136-kilometre stretch on National Highway 15 between Guwahati and Tezpur in Assam. The project will be developed on a build-operate-transfer basis at a cost of INR 89.7 billion, the government said.
The project includes an emergency landing facility on the Tezpur bypass, which has been finalised in consultation with the Indian Air Force. It will decongest the national highway on the southern side of the river Brahmaputra, according to an official release. The project includes construction of five major bypasses to ease traffic congestion in densely populated areas such as Baihata Chariali, Sipajhar, Kharupetia, Dekiajuli, and Tezpur.
In addition, the project has provision for 15 major bridges, 30 minor bridges, 19 flyovers, one elephant underpass, 46 underpasses, and 210 kilometres of service road along the stretch for the cross movement of traffic. "The project will increase average travel speeds by 100%, reduce travel time to half, improve overall road safety, enhance fuel efficiency, and lower vehicle operating costs, thereby enhancing regional mobility and socio-economic development," as per the release.
It said the project will provide seamless connectivity to key economic, social, and logistics nodes across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Additionally, the upgraded corridor will enhance connectivity to eight industrial parks, two "aspirational districts" of Darrang and Udalguri, and three tourist spots of Maa Kamakhaya Temple, Kaziranga National Park, and Orang National Park.
Besides, it will enhance connectivity between three major railway stations, two airports, and two waterway terminals, "thereby facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers across the region", the government said in the release. End
