MUMBAI – Indian equity indices remained rangebound on Thursday, trading in a narrow range throughout the session. For the Nifty 50, the gap between its level at the end of continuous trading and its closing level narrowed substantially, with Thursday's difference at just nine points. However, the divergence in the two benchmark indices has persisted since the closing auction was introduced on Monday. Analysts said it would take some more time for price discovery to stabilise, and that trading on monthly futures and options expiry would be closely watched.

On Thursday, the Nifty 50 ended at 24636 points, up 11.35 points, or 0.1%. The Nifty 50 August futures contract ended at a premium of over 100 points. The current-month futures contract had ended at a premium of 23 points on Wednesday and at a discount on Monday and Tuesday. Last-minute volatility in the index has eased significantly, with the gap between the end of continuous trading and its closing level narrowing on Thursday. Analysts attribute such movements to insufficient liquidity during the closing auction. However, higher participation is expected to reduce such discrepancies, they said.

"Institutional players would be facing difficulty in finding sellers (during the closing auction session), and buying stocks even at a premium to keep up their portfolio," a senior technical analyst at a large brokerage said. "The new system needs some time to come to terms with all the changes, with price discovery," he added.

The BSE Sensex closed at 78954.76 points, up 373.76 points or 0.5%. The Sensex August futures contract ended at a premium of 205 points against the spot. The disparity between the two headline indices persisted even on Thursday, with the ratio between their rises increasingly different since Monday.

Power Grid Corp. of India was the worst-hit stock on the Nifty 50 index throughout the session and ended 4% lower after its net profit fell 7% on year. Steel-makers such as Tata Steel and JSW Steel ended around 2% lower.

Among sectoral indices, traders favoured state-owned banks, lifting the Nifty PSU Bank index to the top of the sectoral gains with gains of more than 2%, ahead of State Bank of India's earnings on Friday. Union Bank of India, Indian Bank, and Bank of Baroda ended 2-4% higher.

The Nifty Oil & Gas index ended about 1% higher. Reliance Industries gained 3.5%, followed by Aegis Vopak Terminals and Castrol India, which ended 1-2% higher. Meanwhile, Indian Oil Corp. and Bharat Petroleum gained around 1?ch. Crude oil prices have eased substantially since the US and Iran called off further military strikes and began efforts to end hostilities through a peace deal.

Among the Nifty 200 stocks, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders was the top gainer, up over 6%. Others such as Hindustan Aeronautics and Kalyan Jewellers ended 5-6% higher. Blue Star ended around 6% lower after the company's net profit declined over 15% on account of high input costs.

Meanwhile, Navin Fluorine International, up nearly 14%, was the top-performing Nifty 500 constituent. The stock hit a record high of INR 8,775.50 after reporting a robust set of numbers for the quarter ended June. On the other hand, Firstsource Solutions shed over 13% and was the biggest laggard in the index. Shares of the company fell after its Apr-Jun net profit declined sharply on quarter and missed analysts' estimates.
