India Wednesday rainfall 6% above normal, season's deficit at 11%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 9.6 millimetres of rain Wednesday, 6% above the normal of 9.1 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Aug. 5, the country received 434.5 millimetres of rain, 11% below the normal of 491 millimetres for the period.

 

Of the four homogeneous regions of the country, east and northeast India registered "large excess" rains and northwest India received "excess" rains Wednesday. Central India received "deficient" rains and south India received "normal" rains.

 

East and northeast India received 20 millimetres of rain on Wednesday, 102% above the normal rain for the day, while south India received 3% below-normal rains at 6.5 millimetres and northwest India recorded 9.7 millimetres of rainfall, 43% above the normal. Central India recorded 6.5 millimetres of rainfall on Wednesday, 47% below the normal. 

 

Wednesday, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim received the highest rainfall at 58.7 millimetres, followed by coastal Karnataka at 40.5 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data. 

 

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large excess" in 10, "excess" in six, "normal" in seven, "deficient" in seven, and "large deficient" in six subdivisions, according to the data.  End
