Bayer Crop Q1 PAT rises 15% on year despite fall in revenue

MUMBAI – Bayer Cropscience Ltd. reported a double-digit year-on-year increase in its net profit for the June quarter despite a fall in the company's revenue from operations. The increase in profit is mainly on account of changes in inventories of finished goods, work-in-progress, and stock-in-trade.
Bayer Crop's net profit for the June quarter jumped 15% on year to INR 3.22 billion. Analysts had expected the company's net profit for the June quarter between INR 1.99 billion and INR 2.57 billion.
The company's revenue from operations fell 4% on year to INR 18.35 billion in the June quarter. The Street had estimated the company to report revenue between INR 17.61 billion and INR 18.19 billion in the June quarter.
The company's total expenses declined 5% on year to INR 15.22 billion in the June quarter. Within expenses, changes in inventories of finished goods, work-in-progress, and stock-in-trade for the June quarter were negative INR 743 million compared with a positive INR 680 million a year ago.
Depreciation and amortisation expenses for the quarter rose 84% on year to INR 501 million. The cost of materials consumed, the company's highest expense constituent, remained almost flat on year at INR 10.42 billion. The expense for purchase of stock-in-trade and employee benefits rose 8% on year each to INR 683 million and INR 1.13 billion, respectively. Other expenses rose 9% on year to 3.18 billion.
Wednesday, the company's shares ended at INR 4,302.90 on the National Stock Exchange, up 0.8% from the previous close. The company announced its June quarter earnings after market hours.
