NEW DELHI – NHPC Ltd. Tuesday reported higher-than-expected standalone net profit for the June quarter even as the company's total expenses rose faster than its revenues. The revenue from operations missed the Street's expectation by a considerable margin.

The company's bottom line grew year-on-year for the sixth consecutive quarter, though the pace of growth was slower than in the preceding two quarters. The top line grew for the second quarter in a row, but again at a slower pace than in the March quarter.

The power producer reported a standalone net profit of INR 11.13 billion for the June quarter, up 3.9% on year. Analysts had pegged the company's net profit at INR 10.37 billion. Its revenue rose nearly 19% on year to INR 35.37 billion for the quarter, lower than the Street's expectation of INR 37.02 billion.

The company's total income for the June quarter rose nearly 16% on year to INR 37.42 billion. But the total expenses grew nearly 28% on year to INR 25.51 billion. Of this, finance costs zoomed nearly 139% on year to INR 6.02 billion, and expenses related to depreciation and amortisation grew nearly 40% to INR 5.78 billion. The other expenses grew nearly 12% to INR 7.29 billion. Expenses related to employee benefits declined more than 6% to INR 3.68 billion.

NHPC's operating margin expanded to 46.73% in the June quarter from 43.10% a year ago. Tuesday, shares of the company closed at INR 80.50 on the National Stock Exchange, up 1.6% from Monday. The company released its earnings after market hours.  End
