MUMBAI – India recorded 8.6 millimetres of rain Tuesday, 7?low the normal of 9.3 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Aug. 4, the country received 424.9 millimetres of rain, 12?low the normal of 481.9 millimetres for the period.

 

Of the four homogeneous regions of the country, two--east and northeast India and northwest India--registered "normal" rains Tuesday. Central India received "deficient" rains and south India registered "excess" rains.

 

The east and northeast region received 16?ove-normal rains at 11.7 millimetres Tuesday, south India received 41% above-normal rains at 10.3 millimetres, and northwest India recorded 8 millimetres of rainfall, 13?ove the normal. Meanwhile, central India recorded 6.8 millimetres of rainfall, 44% below the normal. 

 

Tuesday, coastal Karnataka received the most rainfall at 61.4 millimetres, followed by Konkan and Goa at 26.2 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data. The bureau has issued a red alert for Assam and Meghalaya amid forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall Wednesday.

 

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large excess" in 10, "excess" in five, normal" in six, "deficient" in 10, and "large deficient" in five subdivisions, according to the data.  End
