NEW DELHI – Bharti Airtel Ltd. Tuesday posted a healthy sequential rise in consolidated net profit for the June quarter, helped by a marginal increase in average revenue per user for the three months. This was despite a one-time cost on account of provisions tied to settlement of a commercial dispute. The bottom line, however, missed analysts' consensus estimate by a considerable margin.
Revenues for the quarter also logged a moderate increase backed by sequential growth across segments. The metric surpassed the Street's expectations by a comfortable margin.
The telecommunications giant's bottom line grew sequentially for a second consecutive quarter and at a slightly faster pace than in the March quarter. The top line rose for the ninth quarter in a row. The pace of growth stood at a five-quarter high.
Bharti Airtel's consolidated net profit for the June quarter rose nearly 12% sequentially and over 37% on year to INR 81.67 billion. Analysts' consensus estimate had pegged the bottom line for the quarter at INR 85.51 billion.
The company recognised a one-time cost of INR 3.53 billion in the June quarter on account of a provision for in-principle settlement of a commercial dispute in one of the group subsidiaries in Africa. "The net charge allocated to non-controlling interests on the above exceptional items is INR 738 million," the company said in notes to the financial results. However, even in the absence of the one-time cost incurred in the reporting quarter, the large-cap company would have failed to meet the Street's bottom-line expectation.
The New-Delhi-headquartered company's consolidated revenue from operations rose 5.7% sequentially and over 18% on year to INR 585.39 billion for the reporting quarter. This was comfortably above the estimate of INR 572.89 billion by the Street.
The company's total expenses in the quarter under review rose largely in line with the revenue at 5.6% sequentially and almost 17% on year to INR 252.36 billion. The largest item of expense, network operating costs, rose 5.9% on quarter to INR 108.10 billion for the three months. Expenses tied to licence fee and spectrum changes grew 4.8% quarter-on-quarter to INR 41.72 billion. Sales and marketing expenses added up to INR 36.93 billion, up 4.6% on quarter. Other expenses totalled INR 27.95 billion, up 5.6% on a sequential basis.
Bharti Airtel's consolidated profit before exceptional items and tax for the reporting quarter was INR 141.26 billion, up from INR 132.05 billion for the March quarter. The company's net profit support from a 3.2% sequential increase in other income to INR 9.07 billion.
The Nifty-50 company registered consolidated earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation of INR 335.99 billion for the June quarter, up 4.9% on quarter. However, the consolidated EBITDA margin contracted to 57.4% from 57.8% in the preceding quarter. Bharti Airtel's consolidated earnings before interest and tax, or EBIT, for the quarter stood at INR 192.82 billion, rising 6.2% sequentially. The EBIT margin expanded to 32.9% from 32.8% in the March quarter.
Bharti Airtel incurred capital expenditure of INR 133.86 billion in the June quarter, compared with INR 160.66 billion in the trailing quarter. Its India capital expenditure added up to INR 96.98 billion for Apr-Jun, lower than INR 134.88 billion reported for the March quarter.
SEGMENTS, CUSTOMERS
Bharti Airtel net added 14.92 million customers in the June quarter to take its overall base to 680.89 million across 15 countries. As of Jun. 30, its subscriber base in India stood at 491.89 million, up 2% from the end of the March quarter. The customer base in Africa expanded 3% sequentially to 189 million during the quarter under review.
Revenues from the India business grew 4.2% sequentially to INR 412.14 billion for the June quarter, driven by "sustained portfolio premiumisation in Mobile & strong momentum in Homes and Airtel Business", the company said in a press release. The EBITDA for the India business came in at INR 247.81 billion, up 3.4% on quarter, while the EBITDA margin contracted by 50 basis points to 60.1%.
The telecom major recorded sales growth across segments in the June quarter. Contribution from the India mobile services segment rose to INR 299.29 billion from INR 288.31 billion in the trailing quarter. The Africa mobile services segment contributed INR 175.66 billion for the three months, up almost 10% sequentially. The two segments accounted, respectively, for 51% and 30% of the company's overall top line for the quarter.
"India Mobile achieved sequential growth of 3.8%, driven by continued portfolio mix improvement. Our postpaid strategy continues to deliver strong outcomes with highest ever customer additions of 1 million. We added 5 million smartphone customers with an industry leading ARPU of 264," Executive Vice-Chairman Gopal Vittal was quoted as saying in the release.
In the March quarter, Bharti Airtel's India mobile average revenue per user had declined by INR 2 to INR 257. Analysts had widely expected the metric to rise sequentially in the June quarter, although to INR 260-261 only, on the back of customer migration to higher generation network and one extra day in the quarter.
Mobile data consumption rose 36% on year, reaching 34.4 gigabytes per customer per month during the quarter, according to the release.
In dollar terms, revenues from the Africa business totalled $1.85 billion for the June quarter, up from $1.75 billion for the trailing quarter. In constant currency terms, revenues from this business grew 5.7% sequentially. Among other divisions, the Airtel Business segment recorded sales of INR 56.65 billion for the three months, up over 3% sequentially. The passive infrastructure services business registered INR 85.25 billion in sales for the June quarter compared with INR 82.01 billion for the March quarter.
Revenues from the homes services segment rose 4.4% sequentially to INR 22.88 billion for the reporting quarter and those from the digital TV services segment grew 3.6% sequentially to INR 7.73 billion.
Market participants will react to Bharti Airtel's June-quarter earnings Wednesday as the company detailed the results after market hours. Tuesday, its shares ended at INR 1,970.10 on the National Stock Exchange, largely unchanged from Monday. End
