MUMBAI – The divergence between the closing levels of the two headline indices persisted Tuesday, the second day of the new closing auction session. While the exchanges have broadly clarified that the implementation of the system is exactly as intended, the disparity was evident. Late Monday, the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. had said in a release that the disparity in index values was a function of the market rather than any technical glitch.
Tuesday, the Nifty 50 settled at 24614.90 points, down 159.40 points or 0.6%. This was about 151 points higher than the level of 24463.45 points that the index had reached when the continuous trading session ended at 1515 IST. The BSE Sensex settled at 78428.95 points, down 210.08 points or 0.3%. This was a premium of over 100 points from the 1515 IST level of 78324.56 points.
The 50-stock ended 0.6% lower while the BSE Sensex ended 0.3% lower. The difference in closing levels could be the result of separate order books for both exchanges for the closing auction sessions, which means the prices of individual stocks would also be different. "As the index is calculated based on the prices determined of individual stocks, the index values can also be different," NSE had said in its press release.
"Tuesday's weekly expiry, combined with the implementation of the new mechanism for determining F&O (futures and options) closing prices, has led to a distortion in market trends," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note. The significant gap between the 1515 IST and 1535 IST closing prices of Nifty 50 stocks and the benchmark index, along with the divergence with the BSE Sensex, suggests that the new system is not functioning as intended, resulting in heightened price volatility. This has triggered forced square-offs of positions, particularly among retail investors, ahead of the 15-minute derivatives closing session, Nair said.
However, the gap between the closing change in the Nifty 50 and the Sensex came down Tuesday. Monday, the disparity was sharper as the 50-stock index ended 1.6% higher while the Sensex ended only 0.7% higher. Tuesday, the Nifty 50 fell sharply at the open, adjusting to Monday's 1515 IST level, thereby reducing the gap.
However, more clarity on the price discovery through the closing auction session and the method of calculation is awaited. Analysts are still confused which levels they should track for the closing, as there was last-moment price adjustment at scale even Tuesday. "Every day after 3:15 pm everone will be just waiting to know what would be the quantum of spike, whether it would be towards the upside or downside, and more importantly, by how many points?," Ashish Sherigar, derivatives and technical analyst at NVS Brokerage, said. "Today the spike was 150 points, and some day what if it falls, then what would happen?"
Tuesday, shares of Grasim Industries, HDFC Life Insurance, and Bajaj Auto ended 2-4% lower. On the other hand, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise, Hindalco Industries, and Trent ended 1-3% higher. Among Nifty 200 stocks, KEI Industries rose over 9% and was the top gainer, followed by CG Power and Industrial Solutions, which ended 6.5% higher. Ather Energy took the top spot in the Nifty 500, closing 14% higher. Meanwhile, Life Insurance Corp. of India ended around 9% lower.
