MUMBAI – Alembic Pharmaceuticals Ltd. reported a jump in revenue from operations for the June quarter but the rise in total expenses outpaced the sales growth, preventing the net profit from growing in line with revenuesBoth the revenue and the profit beat analyst estimates by a wide margin, however.

 

The medicine maker's consolidated net profit for the June quarter rose 12% on year to INR 1.73 billion. For the year-ago quarter, it had reported a net profit of INR 1.54 billion. Analysts had expected the company to report a net profit of INR 1.53 billion.

 

Alembic Pharma's consolidated revenue from operations for the June quarter was INR 21.50 billion, up 26% from INR 17.10 billion for the corresponding quarter a year ago. Analysts had expected the company to report net sales of INR 19.02 billion.

 

The company's total expenses grew 27% on year to INR 19.43 billion. The expenses rose mainly on account of a 21% rise in other expenses and a 20% increase in cost of materials consumed. Other expenses, the biggest expense head for the company, accounted for more than 37% of the total expenses.

 

At 1445 IST, shares of the company were at INR 806.3 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, up marginally from Monday. The stock dipped nearly 2?ter the company detailed its June quarter earnings. It eventually closed at INR 809.40, up 0.5% from Monday.

 

The company's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation margin for the June quarter contracted 100 basis points to 16% from 17% reported in the year-ago quarter. The EBITDA, before research and development expenses, increased to INR 5.23 billion. The company spent 9% of the consolidated revenue for the June quarter on R&D, up from 8% reported a year ago.

 

"Performance during the quarter was driven by healthy volume growth, successful new product launches, and continued execution across key markets," Pranav Amin, managing director of the company, said. "The US business delivered strong momentum and the rest of the markets also recorded steady growth."

 

Alembic Pharma's India formulation sales for the June quarter rose 7% on year to INR 6.42 billion. The US formulation sales grew 49% to INR 7.78 billion. The company's active pharmaceutical ingredient business grew 33% on year to INR 3.46 billion. The pharmaceutical company introduced three new products in India during the quarter and made seven launches in the US market.  End
