MUMBAI – Intense rainfall is likely to continue over parts of east and northeast India due to the presence of multiple weather systems, including the monsoon trough and three upper air cyclonic circulations, the India Meteorological Department said. Heavy-to-very heavy rainfall with spells of extremely heavy showers are likely over Assam and Meghalaya till Wednesday, for which the weather department has issued a red alert. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

 

The spell of very heavy rainfall is expected to continue over Arunachal Pradesh till Wednesday, over Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim on Wednesday, Gangetic West Bengal on Thursday, and Odisha on Wednesday and Thursday. Heavy showers are also likely to persist over most parts of east and northeast India till Monday. Thundersquall with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands till Monday.

 

A western disturbance acting as a trough lies to the northwest of the country, an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over north Haryana, and a cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Rajasthan. These weather systems, along with the monsoon trough, are expected to keep triggering heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of northwest India. Very heavy showers are seen over parts of east Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand till Wednesday, west Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday, and east Rajasthan on Friday and Saturday. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over several parts of northwest India till Monday.

 

The strength of rainfall over the rest of the country is likely to remain largely subdued. In central India, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday and Friday. Most of the region is expected to continue recording heavy showers with thunderstorms and lightning till Saturday.

 

Very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Konkan and Goa on Wednesday and over central Maharashtra on Wednesday and Thursday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers are likely over Konkan and Goa on Thursday, while light to moderate showers with thunderstorms and lightning are likely over multiple parts of west India till Saturday, the bureau said.

 

In south peninsular India, heavy showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over many parts of the region till Saturday, the weather department said. Strong surface winds are expected over parts of Karnataka and Kerala till Thursday, over Andhra Pradesh till Saturday and over Telangana till Monday, the department said.  End
