MUMBAI – Motherson Sumi Wiring India Ltd.'s net profit for the June quarter grew modestly on year and missed the Street's view. The bottom line was limited by the growth in the company's total expenses outpacing the growth in its total income. The company's revenue for the June quarter rose on year and was above the average of analysts' estimate.

For Apr-Jun, the automobile component maker posted a net profit of INR 1.45 billion, up nearly 2% on year. Analysts had pegged the figure at INR 1.61 billion. The company's revenue for the June quarter, however, jumped 37% on year to INR 34.07 billion and was above the Street's estimate of INR 32.77 billion.

Timely expansion into greenfields projects and successful ramp-up of new customer programmes contributed to substantial revenue growth and enhanced customer confidence, the company said in its press release. Shares of the company were nearly flat on the National Stock Exchange before it declared its earnings; however, they slipped into the red subsequently. At 1202 IST, shares of the company were down 4.5% at INR 39.63 on the NSE.

For the June quarter, the company's total income grew 37% on year to INR 34.13 billion. However, its total expenses grew even faster and was up nearly 40% on year to INR 32.17 billion. The growth in expenses was led by a 42% on-year jump in the company's raw material costs to INR 24.07 billion, which accounts for nearly 75% of the company's total expenses.

The company also recorded a 26% on-year jump in its employee costs to INR 6.02 billion, which was the second highest contributor to its total expenses. "Higher average copper prices compared with the prior year, along with significant minimum wage revisions in multiple states, impacted profitability," the company said in its press release. A near 8% increase in the company's tax outgo to around INR 500 million further limited the bottom line.

Given the surge in the company's operating expenses, its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation rose a modest 6% on year to INR 2.58 billion. The company is continuing to engage in discussions with its customers to recover cost increases and maintain business momentum, according to the press release.  End
