MUMBAI – India recorded 6.2 millimetres of rain Monday, 32?low the normal of 9.0 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Aug. 3, the country received 416.3 millimetres of rain, 12?low the normal of 472.6 millimetres for the period.

 

Of the four homogeneous regions of the country, three--east and northeast India, northwest India and south India--registered "normal" rains Monday. Central India received "large deficient" rains.

 

The east and northeast region received 14?low-normal rains at 9.6 millimetres Monday, south India received 11% above normal rains at 7.2 millimetres, and northwest India recorded 5.5 millimetres of rainfall, 14?low the normal. Meanwhile, central India recorded 4.5 millimetres of rainfall, 61% below the normal. 

 

Monday, Kerala & Mahe received the highest rainfall at 45.2 millimetres, followed by Konkan and Goa at 36.8 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data. The bureau has issued a red alert for Assam and Meghalaya, Sikkim, and adjoining parts of West Bengal amid forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall Tuesday.

 

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large excess" in five, "excess" in one, normal" in eight, "deficient" in eight, and "large deficient" in 14 subdivisions, according to the data.  End
