Karnataka Cabinet expansion exposes fault lines within ruling Congress

NEW DELHI – Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar Monday inducted 20 ministers, filling all the berths in the 34-member council of ministers. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru. However, the tightrope walk exposed fault lines within the ruling Indian National Congress, with two legislators resigning after being left out.
Yashwanth Rayagouda Patil, legislator from Indi in Vijayapura district, and Sagar legislator Belur Gopalkrishna announced their resignations when they found they were not included in the ministry even after last-minute changes.
Those who made it to the Cabinet are P.M. Narendraswamy, Shivaraj Tangadagi, Rudrappa Lamani, K.S. Basavanthappa, B. Nagendra, T. Raghumoorthy, B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan, Rizwan Arshad, Santosh Lad, Madhu Bangarappa, Putturanga Shetty, S.S. Mallikarjun, Ajay Singh, N. Chaluvaraya Swamy, K.M. Shivalinge Gowda, H.C. Balakrishna, Gayathri Shanthegowda, Basavaraj Rayareddi, Vijayanand Kashappanavar, and Laxman Savadi.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the Cabinet expansion, the chief minister urged the disappointed legislators to be patient, saying he too had once missed out on becoming a minister but got the opportunity later. "There are many MLAs," Shivakumar said. "It is not possible to accommodate everyone. We will provide opportunities to everyone in the future."
Among the prominent names to have been excluded are former ministers Dinesh Gundu Rao, H.K. Patil, H.C. Mahadevappa, K. Venkatesh, Sharanabasappa Darshanapur, and R.B. Timmapur, apart from Belagavi Rural legislator Lakshmi Hebbalkar.
Shivakumar took over as chief minister of Karnataka on Jun. 3 after the party's central leadership persuaded Siddaramaiah to step down. End
