Govt cuts August sugar sales quota for Karnataka; ups for Maharashtra, UP

MUMBAI – The government has raised the August sugar sales quota for Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, while cutting it for Karnataka, according to the notification issued by the Department of Food and Public Distribution on Friday.
The quota for Karnataka was set at 279,155 tonnes for August, down more than 12% from the July sales quota. On the other hand, the sales quota for Maharashtra was raised by 8% to 775,003 tonnes, and Uttar Pradesh was increased by 2.4% on month to 842,880 tonnes.
The Centre has set the all-India domestic sugar quota for August at 2.25 million tonnes, up 2.2% on month but unchanged from a year ago. The market was expecting a higher sales quota of around 2.30 million-2.40 million tonnes in August. Every month, the government sets the maximum quantity of sugar that mills across the country can sell to support prices and help mills clear sugarcane dues to farmers.
The announcement of the August sugar sales quota was eagerly awaited as sugar prices have risen more than 15% in the past few weeks due to panic buying and speculation that supplies could tighten in the coming months. Following the announcement of the August sales quota, ex-mill sugar prices have risen as the quota fell short of market expectations for August, which marks the beginning of the festival season. Sugar prices typically increase in August due to higher purchases by confectioneries and bakeries to cater to festivals such as Raksha Bandhan, Independence Day, Onam and Milad-un-Nabi.
