MUMBAI – The presence of two cyclonic circulations and the monsoon trough means the intensity of rainfall over parts of east and northeast India is likely to increase in the next six days, the India Meteorological Department said. Heavy to very heavy rainfall with spells of extremely heavy showers are likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Tuesday and over Assam and Meghalaya on Tuesday and Wednesday, for which the weather department has issued a red alert.
A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. Heavy rainfall is expected to persist over most parts of east and northeast India till Sunday, the weather bureau said. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 kilometres per hour are expected over parts of Andaman and Nicobar Islands till Sunday, the bureau said.
The strength of rainfall over the rest of the country is expected to be subdued during the next few days, the weather department said. In south peninsular India, most of the intense showers are likely to be limited to the western side of the region, with heavy rainfall expected over parts of Karnataka, Kerala, and some parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till Sunday, the department said. Light to moderate showers are expected over the rest of the region during the same period.
Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over many parts of northwest India till Sunday. In central India, heavy showers are likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh from Thursday to Saturday and over Chhattisgarh till Sunday. A wet spell with thunderstorms and lightning is expected over most parts of central India till Sunday.
Light to moderate showers are likely to continue over most parts of west India till Sunday. End
