MUMBAI – Coal production from captive and commercial mines in India stood at 14.78 million tonnes and coal dispatches reached 17.49 million tonnes in July, the Ministry of Coal said in a press release Monday. Coal production was up 9.6% on year in July, reflecting sustained momentum in mining operations and the increasing contribution of these mines to the country's domestic coal output, the ministry said. 

Monthly production and dispatch of coal from captive and commercial mines rose in July on the back of continued improvements in operational efficiency, enhanced mining productivity, and more effective utilisation of mining capacities across the coal mining sector, the ministry said. The rise in production from these mines are expected to reduce India's dependence on imported coal, strengthen supply chain resilience, and conserve valuable foreign exchange, the ministry said.

Captive and commercial coal mines have emerged as an increasingly important source of domestic coal supply to meet the country's growing energy and industrial demand. The ministry said it remains focused on unlocking the potential of the sector through policy measures, regulatory oversight, and stakeholder support to sustain production growth and improve coal availability.  End
