NEW DELHI – Utkarsh Small Finance Bank Ltd. posted a net loss for the June quarter, its fifth consecutive quarterly loss. However, the loss narrowed sharply on year, thanks to a slump in the lender's provisions.

 

Utkarsh Small Finance Bank recorded a net loss of INR 339.20 million for the June quarter against a net loss of INR 2.39 billion a year ago. Its net loss for the March quarter was INR 1.88 billion.

 

The lender's provisions fell over 73% on year to INR 1.09 billion in the June quarter. Sequentially, the provisions fell over 55%.

 

The Varanasi-based small finance bank's asset quality improved sharply, with the gross non-performing asset ratio falling to 6.09% in the June quarter from 7.71% in the March quarter and 11.42% a year ago. The net non-performing asset ratio fell to 2.86% from 3.29% in the trailing quarter and 5.0% in the June quarter last year.

 

The bank's total income fell almost 2% on year to INR 10.02 billion, weighing on the bottom line. Sequentially, however, it was up over 5%. Of the total income, other income fell the most, 14% on year, to INR 1.19 billion. Interest income was broadly steady at INR 8.84 billion.

 

The lender's total expenses rose just over 1% on year to INR 9.39 billion in the quarter under review. Of this, operating expenses rose 6.6% on year to INR 4.77 billion. Interest expenses fell almost 4% on year to INR 4.61 billion.

 

The bank's capital adequacy ratio fell to 17.44% in Apr-Jun from 19.64% a year ago. It was at 17.71% in the March quarter. Friday, Utkarsh Small Finance Bank's shares ended at INR 14.62 on the National Stock Exchange, up 2.2% from Thursday.  End
