MUMBAI – India entered the second half of the southwest monsoon with above-normal rainfall on the first day, though the season's deficit persisted. The country received 11.5 millimetres of rainfall Saturday, 29?ove the normal of 8.9 millimetres, data from the India Meteorological Department showed. During Jun. 1–Aug. 1, India received 402.2 millimetres of precipitation, 12% below normal for the period.

 

Of the four homogeneous regions in the country, rainfall was above normal in two and below normal in the other two. Rainfall in central India was 75?ove normal at 19.2 millimetres, the data showed. Saurashtra and Kutch in Gujarat and central Maharashtra continued to record "large excess" showers due to the presence of a depression near the regions. However, this weather system has weakened, and will continue to do so in the next 24 hours, reducing the intensity of rainfall over these regions. 

 

In south peninsular India, rainfall was 71?ove normal at 11.6 millimetres, according to the met department. In northwest India, rainfall was 47?low normal at 3.9 millimetres while in east and northeast India it was 12?low normal at 9.3 millimetres. In the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 11, "large excess" in eight, "deficient" in seven, "normal" in six, and "excess" in four, the data showed.  End
