Coal India production rises 8% in July, sales jump over 17%

MUMBAI – Coal India Ltd. reported an over 8% increase in its coal production in July, mainly on the back of a sharp jump in production at its second-largest subsidiary, South Eastern Coalfields Ltd., and Central Coalfields Ltd. The Maharatna company's sales for July grew at an even faster pace than production at over 17% on year.
The state-owned coal mining and refining company's production grew 8.4% on year to 50.4 million tonnes in July, while sales grew 17.4% on year to 63.7 million tonnes. During Apr-Jul, the total production declined 4.3% on year to 220 million tonnes, while sales increased 6.8% on year to 261.9 million tonnes.
Production at Central Coalfields rose nearly 57% on year to 5.9 million tonnes, and sales jumped over 66% on year to 7.4 million tonnes. Coal India's second-largest subsidiary, South Eastern Coalfields, reported a 17.5% year-on-year growth in production to 11.5 million tonnes and sales rose over 11% on year to 14.4 million tonnes in July.
The company's third-largest subsidiary, Northern Coalfields Ltd. reported a 2.4% rise in its production to 10.9 million tonnes in July. Its sales grew 3.7% on year to 10.9 million tonnes last month. Eastern Coalfields Ltd., which has superior grades of coal compared with other subsidiaries, registered a 34.1% on-year rise in output to 3.6 million tonnes and a 38.4% rise in sales to 4.5 million tonnes.
Bharat Coking Coal Ltd., which was recently listed on bourses, also posted healthy numbers. Production rose 3.4% on year to 2.5 million tonnes in July, recovering from the sharp fall it saw in June. Its sales grew 10.6% on year to 2.8 million tonnes in July. Meanwhile, production at the company's largest subsidiary, Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd., fell nearly 11% on year to 13.1 million tonnes in July, but sales grew 10.4% on year to 18.2 million tonnes.
Coal India said it has offered 25.19 million tonnes for e-auction in July through Single Window Mode Agnostic, or SWMA. The company has allocated 8.40 million tonnes in July through e-auction. For Apr-Jul, the company had put on offer 108.1 million tonnes and allocated 39.46 million tonnes through the e-auction.
For the June quarter, Coal India reported a consolidated net profit of INR 88.52 billion on revenue of INR 462.55 billion. Friday, its shares closed down nearly 1% at INR 414.15 apiece on the National Stock Exchange. End
