India, Rwanda commit to deepen bilateral trade, investment cooperation

NEW DELHI – India and Rwanda, at their first Joint Trade Committee Meeting, committed to deepen bilateral trade and investment cooperation. In a joint statement, both sides committed to make concerted efforts to diversify the bilateral trade basket, facilitate business-to-business engagement and address market access issues, the government said Saturday in a release. The two countries also identified priority areas for cooperation, including critical minerals, healthcare and digital technologies.
From India, Amit Kumar, joint secretary at the commerce ministry, led the meeting in New Delhi, which was co-chaired by the Republic of Rwanda's Director General in charge of Asia, the Middle East, and the Pacific at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Virgile Rwanyagatare.
In pharmaceuticals and healthcare, both sides said a memorandum of understanding between the health authorities of the two countries is at an advanced stage of finalisation for signature. India also proposed recognition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia and expanded cooperation in traditional medicine. In critical minerals, India expressed interest in strengthening collaboration on Rwanda's tin, tungsten and tantalum resources. This included institutional cooperation between the Geological Survey of India and the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board.
India highlighted the scope to ramp up exports of engineering goods, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, refined petroleum, textiles, marine products, plastics, sports goods, toys, gems and jewellery, and scientific instruments. India continues to be Rwanda's top supplier of pharmaceuticals with a 24.5% share. Both sides also discussed cooperation on harmonisation of standards, including capacity building between the Bureau of Indian Standards and the Rwanda Standards Board.
Other areas discussed included agriculture and agro-processing, avocado market access, textiles, leather, green mobility, digital public infrastructure, fintech and cybersecurity, and renewable energy. India also offered capacity building through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme, the Study in India initiative and the Skill India Mission, including support for strengthening Rwanda's Technical and Vocational Education and Training ecosystem.
On investment, Rwanda said India is its second-largest foreign investor as of 2025 and pointed to opportunities in mining, agro-processing, affordable housing, information and communication technology, manufacturing, healthcare, tourism and financial services. Invest India and the Rwanda Development Board were named as joint trade committee investment focal points. The two sides also agreed to share schedules of trade fairs, business forums and buyer-seller meets.
The two sides will hold the next Joint Trade Committee meeting in Rwanda after a year. End
