MUMBAI – Eicher Motors Ltd. Saturday said its joint venture VE Commercial Vehicles sold 8,241 units in July, almost 16% higher on year. Strength in the domestic market drove the company's despatches in July, even as exports slumped.

VE Commercial Vehicles is a 50:50 joint venture between Eicher Motors and Swedish auto giant Volvo Group. The wholesale sales of Eicher Motors' trucks and buses grew 16% on year to 8,045 units in July. Sales of Volvo trucks and buses grew 12% on year to 196 units.

Despatches of Eicher Motors' commercial vehicles in the domestic market grew 18% on year to 7,575 units. The surge in wholesale truck sales was offset by a lull in bus sales. The company sold 4,394 trucks with a payload capacity under 18.5 tonnes in India, up almost 29% on year. This sub-segment forms around 60% of its commercial vehicle sales in India.

Exports by VE Commercial Vehicles fell 11% to 470 units in July. All sub-segments reported a year-on-year contraction in export sales in July.

In Apr-Jul, the company sold 33,056 commercial vehicles, up 15% on year. Of this, it sold 30,342 vehicles in India, up 16% on year.

For the June quarter, Eicher Motors had reported a consolidated net profit of INR 14.63 billion on revenues of INR 66.32 billion. Friday, its shares closed at INR 7,833.50 on the National Stock Exchange, slightly lower.  End
