MUMBAI – The Nifty Pharma index is expected to outperform headline indices on its way up next week. The index ended higher this week, supported by a sharp rise in shares of domestic-focused companies, which are likely to continue to do well. Additionally, with the war in West Asia once again putting pressure on interest rate- and crude-sensitive stocks, a sectoral rotation in favour of these companies is likely.
Traders will also closely watch the June quarter earnings announcements of GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, Aurobindo Pharma, Lupin, and Biocon, among other pharmaceutical companies next week. Domestic sales of drugmakers are expected to remain strong, sparking interest in shares of India-focused companies. However, shares of US-focused companies may come under pressure as their revenues continue to be dragged down by sharply lower generic Revlimid sales.
Consequently, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, which Friday reported a large fall in US sales, could see some more selling pressure. The pharma major reported solid growth in domestic sales and its management said the company is now the second-biggest generic semaglutide player in the Indian pharmaceutical market, which could allay investors' worry over the growth prospects of the company. Analysts are keenly monitoring commentary from companies which have a sizeable presence in the US as they want to understand which drug or segment could be the next lever of growth in the absence of generic Revlimid sales. The management of Sun Pharma is convinced that this growth will come from its innovative drug portfolio which includes drugs such as Ilumya, Cequa, and Leqselvi.
Analysts said the inelastic demand for pharmaceutical products will continue to drive volumes amid the war in West Asia. With the war between the US and Iran escalating rapidly and spreading to other countries, crude oil prices are likely to rise more, something that has prompted sectoral rotation towards pharma stocks in the past. Iran Friday said transit through the Strait of Hormuz is impossible because of the continued aggressive actions of US forces in the region, several media reports said, citing the country's Fars news agency. "Once stability and calm are restored, all requests will be reviewed based on their order and scheduling, and permits will be issued gradually," according to media reports quoting Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority.
This week, the Nifty Pharma index ended nearly 4% higher at 26534.80 points. Laurus Labs, Divi's Laboratories, and Piramal Pharma ended 7-13% higher this week. Meanwhile, IPCA Laboratories, Mankind Pharma, and Biocon fell 1–2%.
The Nifty Pharma index is gradually moving north with higher-highs and higher-lows while holding strong above its long-term as well as short-term moving averages, Vipin Kumar, assistant vice-president of research at Globe Capital Market, said. "Going ahead, we uphold our bullish view on this space and suggest traders to continue with buy-on-dips trading approach," the analyst said. He expects the index to find support at 26000–25800 points and face resistance at 26800–27200 points.
