MUMBAI – Shares of fast-moving consumer goods companies are expected to remain in a confined range next week as well, while the focus will be on the shares of FMCG bellwether ITC. The company detailed its earnings for the June quarter after-market hours Friday, with its net profit falling short of Street's view by almost 20% due to a fall in cigarettes sales.

ITC's net profit fell over 27% on year to INR 35.79 billion but its revenue from operations rose 28% on year to INR 269.43 billion on the back of revenue from its cigarettes business. Excluding the excise duty which ITC paid on cigarettes, the country's largest cigarettes maker reported an over 28% on-year decline in sales at a little over INR 169 billion in the June quarter, which is lower than the Street's estimate of around INR 186 billion.

On the earnings front for next week, shares of Britannia Industries, Marico, United Breweries, and Emami will be in focus as these companies are slated to detail their June quarter earnings next week.

From a technical perspective, analysts still maintain their view of rangebound movement for Nifty FMCG in the near term as the index has still not broken either side of the range to make a sustainable move in a particular direction.

"Nifty FMCG index is going through a consolidation phase having important resistance around 50550 points and support at 48000-47500 points," Vipin Kumar, assistant vice president of research at Globe Capital Market, said. "A break on either side of this consolidation range will start the next short term directional move in that direction," he said.

Friday, the Nifty FMCG index closed a percentage point lower at 49121.20 points. For the week, the sectoral index fell just 0.1%, while the benchmark Nifty 50 rose 2.6%. All 15 constituents of Nifty FMCG closed in the red, down 0.2-2.0%. Over the week, Varun Beverages logged the maximum losses, falling 3.3%, while Radico Khaitan rose over 6%, being the top gainer in the Nifty FMCG index.
