Stock-specific action likely amid earnings season

NEW DELHI – Analysts expect stock-specific action in the telecommunications sector as giant Bharti Airtel Ltd. and its subsidiary, Bharti Hexacom Ltd., report their June-quarter earnings on Tuesday.
Bharti Airtel's consolidated net profit for the June quarter is expected to rise nearly 17% sequentially and almost 44% on year to INR 85.51 billion, according to the average of estimates from nine brokerages. Excluding exceptional items reported for the March quarter, the bottom line is expected to decline over 18% quarter-on-quarter. The telecom major's consolidated revenue is expected to grow 3.4% sequentially and nearly 16% on year to INR 572.89 billion, as per the average of estimates.
Analysts estimate Bharti Airtel added 4-5 million wireless subscribers in the June quarter. They expect the company's average revenue per user to rise to INR 260-261 from INR 257 in the March quarter. This is expected on the back of customer migration to a higher-generation network and one extra day in the quarter.
On the other hand, Bharti Hexacom is expected to post a net profit between INR 4.29 billion and INR 4.74 billion for the June quarter, according to estimates from three brokerages. Its revenue is expected to range between INR 23.32 billion and INR 24.91 billion. For the March quarter, the company had reported a net profit of INR 4.47 billion on revenue of INR 24.14 billion.
This week, Bharti Airtel subsidiary Indus Towers Ltd. reported a consolidated net profit of INR 17.46 billion for the June quarter, down 2.6% sequentially. Its consolidated revenues rose over 4% sequentially to INR 84.31 billion.
Among other developments, Bharti Airtel continued to outpace Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. in terms of mobile subscriber additions in June, although the latter retained the top spot in the mobile subscriber base with a market share of 39%, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.
Bharti Airtel net added 2.99 million mobile users in June, taking its subscriber base to 486.80 million. In May, the company had added 2.9 million users. Reliance Jio added net 2.15 million mobile users in June, bringing its subscriber base to 503.58 million. The company had added 2.15 million mobile users in May. Vodafone Idea added 163,757 mobile subscribers in June, taking its total count to 198.82 million. The company had added 121,289 subscribers in May.
During the week, the BSE Telecommunication index rose 0.9% on week to 3572.60. Next week, the index is likely to find support at 3450 points and face resistance at 3,650 points, according to Rishabh Srivastava, research analyst at Lakshmishree Investment and Securities Pvt. Ltd. The index is expected to move sideways with a positive bias, Srivastava said.
