MUMBAI – Robust sales across most segments and healthy growth in orders drove ABB India Ltd.'s top line for the June quarter, which grew at its fastest pace in six quarters. Growth in the company's bottom line was, however, limited by a sharp jump in raw material costs and loss from its discontinued operations.
The power equipment manufacturer's net profit for the June quarter rose 3% on year but fell nearly 80% sequentially to INR 3.62 billion. This was way below the INR 3.73 billion estimated by the Street. The sequential fall in net profit was mainly on the back of a high base in the trailing quarter due to a large contribution from its discontinued operations. For the June quarter, the company posted a net loss of INR 77.7 million from its discontinued operations as against the net profit of INR 14.42 billion reported in the trailing quarter.
The company's revenue from continuing operations for the quarter ended June rose 21% on year and 12% on quarter to INR 35.59 billion, beating analysts' estimate of INR 33.61 billion by a wide margin. Revenue from sales of products and services grew 21% on year to INR 35.21 billion and other operating revenue rose 22% on year to INR 378.4 million.
The company's total expenses rose over 22% on year to INR 31.53 billion in the June quarter, slightly above the 21% rise in total sales. This was mainly on the back of a near 20% on-year rise in the company's raw material cost to INR 17.58 billion and a nearly 11% on-year rise in other expenses to INR 6.22 billion. Its expenses related to purchase of stock-in-trade rose 10% on year to INR 3.69 billion and its employee benefit expense grew 20% to INR 2.51 billion.
ABB India's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation from continuing operations for the quarter ended June rose 11% on year to INR 4.47 billion. This was marginally better than the INR 4.41 billion estimated by the Street. Its EBITDA margin for the quarter declined 100 basis points on year to 12.6%.
The company's top line for the quarter was supported by positive execution momentum across businesses, ABB India said in a post-earnings presentation. Its bottom line was impacted due to mark-to-market movements and foreign exchange volatility, the company said.
Even as near-term margins remain exposed to volatility in commodity prices, higher competition, currency movements, and geopolitical uncertainty, the company remains optimistic about a demand recovery in the second half of 2026. "India's capex cycle is maturing from a cyclical upswing into a structural, multi-year theme anchored in electrification, automation, digitalisation, grid modernisation, and energy transition. This structural shift should keep demand fundamentally sound through H2 CY2026 (Jul-Dec)," the company said.
During the June quarter, the company secured total orders worth INR 43.63 billion, up 50% on year. As of Jun. 30, the company had an order backlog of INR 118.98 billion, up 22% on year. Orders increased across all business areas, led by base orders in electrification and an increase in export orders in motion and automation segments, ABB India said. Growth was also driven by strong demand across both core and emerging segments, particularly in metals and mining, data centres, renewables, food and beverage, cement, automotive, and building infrastructure, it added.
Revenue from the company's electrification business grew 31% on year to INR 18.04 billion, supported by effective price management and higher volumes. Strong execution of order backlogs and higher exports also supported the segment's top line, ABB India said. It received orders worth INR 24.24 billion from the segment, up 77% on year. The segment's order backlog rose 39% on year to INR 48.63 billion as of Jun. 30.
Sales from the motion segment rose 17% on year to INR 12.69 billion, supported by higher service revenue and exports. The company received orders worth INR 13.87 billion from this segment, up 26% on year and the order backlog was INR 48.89 billion as of Jun. 30, up 22% on year.
The automation segment of the company posted revenue of INR 5.24 billion in the June quarter, up 7% on year, supported by execution of orders from energy and metals and mining companies. The company received orders worth INR 5.83 billion from the segment, up 24% on year. As of Jun. 30, the segment had an order backlog of INR 22.24 billion, down 1% on year.
For the six months ended June, the company reported a net profit of INR 21.46 billion, up 160% on year. Its revenue from continuing operations for the period rose over 13% on year to 67.43 billion. ABB India follows the calendar year.
"We enter the second half with confidence, supported by a strong backlog and active opportunity pipeline across a diverse set of industries," Sanjeev Sharma, managing director of the company, said in a release. "India's ongoing investments in infrastructure, manufacturing, energy transition, and digitalisation continue to create long-term opportunities for ABB."
The company also announced a special dividend of INR 90 per share for 2026. The record date for the dividend is Aug. 7.
Friday, shares of ABB India closed at INR 7,284.50 on the National Stock Exchange, down 0.1% from Thursday. The company announced its June quarter earnings after market hours Friday.
