MUMBAI – Urban Co. Ltd. reported a loss for the June quarter owing to a rise in employee expenses, purchase of stock-in-trade, and a near doubling of other expenses. The loss was higher than the Street's estimate with the company's total expenses outpacing its revenue growth. This was the fourth consecutive quarter of loss for the company.

Urban Co. reported a consolidated net loss of INR 921.20 million for the June quarter, against a profit of INR 69.4 million reported for the year-ago quarter. The company had reported a loss of INR 1.61 billion for the trailing quarter.

Urban Co.'s revenue from operations grew 44% on year to INR 5.28 billion, but the total expenses rose more than 66% to INR 6.40 billion. Other expenses accounted for 58% of the company's total expenses. A year-on-year rise of 52% in the company's employee benefit expenses and a rise of 40% in the company's purchases of stock-in-trade further boosted the expenses, keeping the company in the red.

Urban Co.'s total revenue for the June quarter from India consumer services segment, excluding InstaHelp, was INR 3.56 billion, up 31% on year. Services accounted for more than 81% of this revenue with the rest coming from products. Revenue from the Native brand segment was the second highest contributor to the company's revenue from operations, followed by international business.

The InstaHelp segment contributed INR 112.2 million to the company's revenues, up sharply from INR 2.2 million in the year-ago quarter. The segment also saw the highest loss, at INR 1.31 billion. The company expects the losses to remain high becuase it is prioritising its market leadership in the segment "over everything else".

Urban Co. reported a loss in adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation of INR 650 million. Its net transaction value grew 42% on year to INR 14.65 billion. Annual transacting users of the company in the India consumer services segment grew 21% on year to 8.2 million in the June quarter, and spending per annual transacting user rose 7% on year.

Friday, shares of the company ended at INR 129.39 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, down nearly 1% from Thursday. The company detailed its June quarter earnings after market hours.  End
