MUMBAI – Benchmark equity indices ended higher for the third straight session as investors bought into shares of non-banking financial companies, which offest the steep fall in information technology stocks. However, NIfty IT logged out off July with around 17% gains and recorded its biggest monthly rise. This was because Indian IT sector acting as a defensive play for traders who grew anxious about the enthusiasm around the artificial intelligence theme. However, better-than-expected earnings from Microsoft Thursday improved the sentiment and traders bought chip-makers and semiconductor stocks relentlessly, with South Korea's KOSPI gaining 18%.
Meanwhile, the war between the US and Iran saw a fresh escalation, with the latter targetting US bases in Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain early Friday. This was in retaliation to the US forces bombing a building on Iran's Qeshm Island. Analysts are concerned over the volatile movement of crude oil prices, although the commodity stood put at $88 a barrel during the day.
On Friday, the 50-stock index settled at 24383.60 points, up 66.45 points or 0.3%. In July, the index gained over 2%, rising for the second month in a row. This comes after crude oil prices eased from the peak in May and relatively stayed below $100 a barrel. The index has not managed to cross the resistance of 24500 points polled by Informist for July. But, the index managed to close above the support of 23700 points. Barring the indices tied to information technology, fast-moving consumer goods, and consumer durables, all other major sectoral indices closed higher Friday.
Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex closed at 78094.64 points, up 166.49 points or 0.2%. Broader market indices outperformed benchmark indices on Friday. The Nifty Smallcap 250 index gained 3%, so did the Nifty Midcap 50.
Traders turned bearish on Indian information technology on Friday and offloaded shares of these companies, with Tata Consultancy Services closing around 3% lower. While this could also be a move to book profit after sharp gains in the recent sessions, it could also be because traders chose to buy AI-related stocks elsewhere in Asia, as there is some positive sentiment in Wall Street post Microsoft's earnings. Large-cap IT companies such as Infosys, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra ended 1-2% lower. The mid-caps such as Coforge, Mphasis, and LTM ended 1-2% lower.
NBFCs such as Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, and Jio Financial Services ended 4-8% higher. Even, Shriram Finance ended around 2% higher. The Bajaj twins reported strong growth in net profit during the June quarter. Bajaj Finance reported a 27% on-year jump in net profit for the quarter on account of a rise in assets under management and net interest income. A significant increase in customer franchise, leading to higher new loans, supported the financier's bottom line.
Meanwhile, among the Nifty 200 stocks, Hyundai Motor India ended 8% higher. This was after the company's earnings were largely in line with expectations. The company is planning to expand into new markets to boost its export volumes as its supply woes come to an end, the management had said in a post-earnings analyst conference call Thursday. The company plans to boost exports as it is set to launch at least two new models in Oct-Mar, including a mid-size sports utility vehicle and an electric vehicle.
Meanwhile, Mankind Pharma ended over 4% lower. The company epects higher raw material costs stemming from the war in West Asia to put pressure on its gross margins in the September quarter. However, it has retained its gross and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation margin guidance for 2026-27 (Apr-Mar).
