MUMBAI – The deep depression weakened into a depression over east Vidarbha in the latter hours of Thursday and lay over west Vidarbha and adjoining south Madhya Pradesh in the early hours of Friday, the India Meteorological Department said. A shear zone acting as a trough runs from the northeast Arabian Sea to a cyclonic circulation associated with the depression over Vidarbha. Under the influence of these weather systems, extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Gujarat till Saturday, for which the department has issued a red alert.

 

A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. An offshore trough runs from south Gujarat to north Kerala. This weather system, along with the depression and shear zone, is also likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra on Saturday and over Gujarat region on Sunday, the department said. Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is likely over several parts of west India till Monday.

 

A western disturbance acting as a trough runs to the northwest of the country, while the monsoon trough lies south of its normal position. These weather systems are likely to cause very heavy showers over parts of east Rajasthan on Saturday, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall is seen over most parts of northwest India till Thursday, the bureau said.

 

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over central Assam, which is likely to cause very heavy showers over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from Sunday to Wednesday, the bureau said. Heavy showers with thunderstorms and lightning are likely to persist over many parts of northeast India till Thursday, while heavy rainfall is seen over multiple parts of east India during the same period.

 

The offshore trough running from Gujarat to Kerala is likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Karnataka and Kerala till Saturday, the weather department said. Thundersqualls with wind speed reaching 50–60 kilometre per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of north interior Karnataka till Saturday. Strong surface winds are expected over Kerala and Lakshadweep till Sunday and over Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana till Tuesday. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over several parts of south peninsular India till Sunday, the department said.

 

In central India, heavy showers are likely over Chhattisgarh from Monday to Thursday, the weather bureau said. Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected over most parts of central India in the next three to four days, the bureau said.  End
