NEW DELHI – Bajaj Finserv Ltd.'s consolidated net profit for the June quarter rose at the fastest pace in four quarters owing to a steady rise in revenue from operations. However, a jump in expenses, led by a rise in insurance and investment liabilities and finance cost, limited the rise in bottom line.

Bajaj Finserv reported a net profit of INR 31.32 billion for the June quarter, up over 12% on year and over 23% from the quarter ago. Its total income was up over 19% on year at INR 420.37 billion. Following the announcement of the earnings, the company's shares rose marginally and, at 1214 IST, were at INR 2,003.70 on the National Stock Exchange, up 4.5% from the previous close.

Bajaj Finserv is the non-operating holding company of Bajaj Finance Ltd., Bajaj Life Insurance Ltd., Bajaj General Insurance Ltd., and Bajaj Finserv Asset Management Ltd. Bajaj Finance, in turn, is the promoter of Bajaj Housing Finance Ltd. and Bajaj Financial Securities Ltd. Bajaj Life Insurance and Bajaj General Insurance were previously Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Co. Ltd. and Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Co. Ltd., respectively.

The company's insurance and investment liabilities jumped more than 60% on year and nearly doubled from a quarter ago to INR 48.66 billion in Apr-Jun. Finance cost also rose steadily, up over 15% on year and 7% on quarter to INR 78.34 billion. The claims paid also rose nearly 8% on year during the June quarter to INR 60.80 billion. Sequentially, however, the outgo on claims fell over 19%, helping the bottom line rise sequentially.

The company's marquee subsidiary, Bajaj Finance, had a healthy quarter. It reported a consolidated net profit of INR 60.81 billion for the June quarter, up 28% on year. Strong growth in assets under management, leading to a jump in net interest income, helped Bajaj Finance report the firm rise. Its assets under management totalled INR 5.47 trillion at the end of June, up 24% on year.

The general insurance subsidiary, Bajaj General Insurance Ltd., reported a net profit of INR 4.78 billion for the June quarter, lower than INR 6.60 billion in the corresponding quarter a year ago. The gross written premium for the quarter increased 11% to INR 57.89 billion from INR 52.02 billion a year ago. The insurer's assets under management, however, fell to INR 348.98 billion from INR 351.99 billion at the end of June last year. It was "impacted by distribution to shareholders," the company said in a press release.

The general insurance claims ratio improved to 74.3% during the quarter from 71.1% a year ago. The combined ratio improved to 104.7% in the June quarter from 103.6% a year ago. The underwriting loss for the quarter was INR 1.30 billion, higher than INR 1.16 billion a year ago.

The life insurance business, Bajaj Life Insurance, reported a net profit of INR 510 million for the quarter, less than a third of the INR-1.71-billion profit reported in the June quarter last year. New business premium for the June quarter increased 59% to INR 36.78 billion. Renewal premiums for the quarter increased 18% to INR 37.21 billion. Consequently, the gross written premium for the quarter increased 35% to INR 73.99 billion.

During the quarter, Bajaj Finserv, along with its promoter group entities Bajaj Holdings and Investment Ltd. and Jamnalal Sons Pvt. Ltd., completed the acquisition of 23% stake held by Allianz SE in the two insurance subsidiaries, Bajaj General Insurance and Bajaj Life Insurance.  End
