NEW DELHI – Indian Railways has approved two projects--one in Andhra Pradesh and the other on the Mumbai–Chennai route--with a total outlay of INR 5.19 billion, the railway ministry said Thursday. These projects comprise remodelling of the Visakhapatnam Coaching Yard and upgradation of the electric traction system on the Wadi-Raichur section connecting Mumbai and Chennai, the ministry said in two separate releases. These projects will help in improving operational efficiency and modernising core infrastructure while strengthening capacity on high-density routes.

Under the Visakhapatnam Coaching Yard project, Indian Railways will construct additional lines and platforms along with electronic interlocking at a cost of INR 2.99 billion, the release said. The project aims to enhance the station's handling capacity, improve punctuality, and provide modern passenger amenities, it added.

At a cost of INR 2.20 billion, Indian Railways will also upgrade electric traction system on the Wadi-Raichur section of the South Central Railway. "The project covers a 102 route kilometre (204 track kilometre) double-line section and forms part of Indian Railways' ongoing efforts to modernise traction infrastructure on key rail corridors," the ministry said in a separate release.  End
