MUMBAI – Debutant Vedanta Aluminium Metal Ltd. reported a three-fold increase in its consolidated net profit for the June quarter and a sharp on year increase in its consolidated revenue. A fall in the cost of materials consumed by the company aided the jump in profit.

Vedanta Aluminium reported a consolidated net profit of INR 56.29 billion for the June quarter, a three-fold increase on year and a 34% rise sequentially. The company's consolidated revenue from operations were INR 213.93 billion, up 46% on year and up 12% sequentially.

Despite such a sharp jump in sales, the company's total expenses for the June quarter rose only 7% on year to INR 128.70 billion. The company declared a first interim dividend of INR 8 per share with Aug. 5 as the record date.

Vedanta Aluminium's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation for the June quarter were INR 104.99 billion, a more than two-fold rise from the INR 44.79 billion it had reported in the year-ago quarter. The EBITDA margin was 50%, up from the 31% it had reported in the year-ago quarter.

Shares of the company rose sharply after the earnings and were traded at INR 457.60 on the National Stock Exchange, up 4% over Wednesday.

The company's cost of materials consumed, which constituted 42% of total expenses, fell 5% on year to INR 54.70 billion for the June quarter. The aluminium division of Vedanta Ltd. was demerged on May 1 by an order from the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal.

Vedanta Aluminium acquired a 51% equity stake in Bharat Aluminium Co. Ltd. on Apr. 30 from Vedanta Ltd. by issuing 221.80 million compulsorily convertible debentures amounting to INR 221.80 billion. The remaining 49% equity stake in Bharat Aluminium continues to be held by the Government of India.

The company's aluminium production volume for the June quarter was 632,000 tonnes, the highest-ever quarterly production. The production was up 3% on quarter and up 5% on year, primarily due to higher volumes from Bharat Aluminium's smelter. Vedanta's alumina production was 826,000 tonnes for the June quarter, up 41% on year. The company targets over 900,000 tonnes of alumina production in the Jul-Sept quarter.

"Our inaugural quarter as an independent company marks a strong start...," Anup Agarwal, chief financial officer of the company, said. "... As one of the world's leading aluminium producers, we aim to cater to the accelerating demand from energy transition, infrastructure, transportation, packaging, and advanced manufacturing sectors across India and global markets through our integrated value chain and expanding value-added portfolio," he added.

Vedanta Aluminium reported its June quarter EBITDA margin at $1,804 per tonne. The EBITDA margin is expressed in dollars per tonne because commodities like aluminium use absolute margin tracking to remove the effects of volatile raw material prices.

The company had a net debt of INR 295 billion for the June quarter, down from INR 330 billion in the March quarter. The company will invest INR 1.65 billion in Serentica Renewable India 9 Pvt. Ltd. for integration of a 150 megawatt battery energy storage system. The project will be developed on a build-own-operate-maintain basis.

"We have commenced our new, independent chapter with robust operational and financial performance in this quarter, reflecting the success of our approach which merges business resilience, disciplined execution, and a long-term vision," Rajesh Kumar, chief executive officer of the company said.

Thursday, shares of the company closed 4% higher at INR 457.05 on the National Stock Exchange. The shares surged from the day's low of INR 432.90 after posting strong results for the June quarter. End
