MUMBAI – India's headline indices ended in positive territory on Thursday after being choppy for most part of the session. These indices yet again outperformed its Asian peers, which have been in a rout as traders unwound their bets on artificial intelligence theme globally. In India, traders bought shares of automobile and information technology stocks through out the session and sold shares of real estate firms. The Dalal Street's fear gauge, India VIX, rose a scant 1%.
On Thursday, the Nifty 50 index settled at 24317.15 points, up 66.95 points or 0.3%. The 50-stock index moved in a 156-point range in the session. The index rose as high as 24342.95 points during the session, which was up 0.4% from Wednesday's close. The index was expected to face strong resistance at 24500 points during Thursday's session.
However, mid-cap and small-cap indices underperformed the benchmark indices as they came under immense selling pressure. These indices ended 0.3-0.7%. Small-cap stocks were hit the hardest on Thursday. The BSE Sensex closed at 77928.15 points, up 273.55 points or 0.4%. Among sectoral indices, the one gauging automobile companies, gained around 2% and was the top gainer, followed by Nifty Oil & Gas, which was up 0.5%.
Mahindra & Mahindra ended around 2% higher and took the top spot of the Nifty 50 index. This was despite the company's June quarter results being moderate, even as both the top line and the bottom line came in a tad higher than the consensus estimate. The company's net profit came in at a eight-quarter low during the June quarter dragged down by sharp rise in commodity prices.
In a press conference after the results, M&M's management told reporters that they expect pressure from high commodity to prices on earnings to continue till December quarter. The recent price hikes by the company do not take into account inflation in steel and rubber prices or the recent uptick in aluminium prices, the management said.
Sona BLW Precision Forgings ended 6% higher and was the top gainer in the Nifty Auto index. Meanwhile, Exide Industries ended up 4% following its June-quarter earnings, which showed that its sales growth was at a 16-quarter high. The company said it took calibrated price hikes to offset higher input costs during the quarter under review.
Seperately, two-wheeler makers such as TVS Motor Co., Hero MotoCorp, and Eicher Motors ended over 2-3% higher. Brokerages were bullish on Eicher Motors after the company's June quarter results beat the Street's view on both the top line and net profit on Wednesday. They expect the company's volume growth to be robust in the coming quarters on sustained premiumisation, strong domestic demand, export growth, and capacity expansion.
Meanwhile, Balkrishna Industries ended around 11% higher after its net profit and revenue beat Street's view despite higher input costs. However, the company took price hikes in Apr-Jun to offset the impact. The stock was the top gainer in the Nifty 500 index. On other hand, PCBL Chemical ended down over 10?spite its revenue and net profit rising 14% and 15%, respectively.
Traders placed bullish bets on Indian information technology stocks for the fifth straight session, amid enthusiasm about artificial intelligence losing momentum globally. Shares of both large-cap and mid-cap IT companies were equally in demand since last Thursday. While Indian IT companies have ramped up their involvement in AI, with acquisitions in Europe and even in the US, they are still very much away from being pure-play AI firms. This has given Indian IT a broader status of AI-defensive play in the current scenario.
Since last Thursday, the Nifty IT has risen 9% and has jumped 21% so far in July. Shares of Coforge, Wipro, Persistent Systems, and Tech Mahindra were up 0.6-1.9%. Others such as Mphasis and Oracle Financial Services ended 0.6-2.6% lower.
