MUMBAI – Mahanagar Gas reported a sharp on-year fall in its consolidated net profit for the June quarter as growth in total expenses surpassed the increase in revenue due to a sharp rise in the cost of natural gas and traded items. The fall in the net profit was, however, lower than expected by analysts.
The company's consolidated net profit fell over 39% on year to INR 1.94 billion from INR 3.20 billion a year ago. Analysts had expected a net profit of INR 1.37 billion. The consolidated revenue from operations rose 14% on year to INR 25.98 billion from INR 22.80 billion a year ago. Analysts had expected a revenue of INR 22.42 billion. The company's total income increased nearly 14% on year to INR 26.28 billion for the June quarter.
The company's total expenses rose over 26% on year to INR 23.69 billion in the June quarter. Among the major cost components, purchase of natural gas and traded items rose over 32% on year to INR 17.33 billion from INR 13.10 billion in the year-ago quarter. The company's other expenses climbed nearly 7% to INR 2.50 billion and finance costs rose 28% to INR 57 million.
Mahanagar Gas' earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation for the June quarter fell 32% on year to INR 3.43 billion. The company's EBITDA margin for the quarter contracted to 14.46% from 24.06% in the year-ago quarter. The company's compressed natural gas supply revenue rose 7% on year to INR 16.19 billion from INR 15.15 billion a year ago. The sales volume of compressed natural gas grew nearly 10% on year to 318.09 million standard cubic metres.
The revenue from piped natural gas rose 34% on year to INR 7.39 billion from INR 5.50 billion a year ago. The company's total sales volume of piped natural gas grew marginally on year to 115.61 standard cubic meter million. The sales volume of domestic piped natural gas grew 9% on year to 56.67 million standard cubic metres. However, sales volume of industrial piped natural gas fell 7% on year to 58.94 million standard cubic metres.
Mahanagar Gas' total sales volume were 4.77 million metric standard cubic metres per day, up 7% on year and 2% sequentially. The company's shares rose after the earnings and ended at INR 1,118.50 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, up more than 1%. End
