MUMBAI – Westlife Foodworld Ltd. reported a sharp fall in its bottom line for the June quarter due to an increase in the cost of consumed materials, even though other operating income rose. The company reported a consolidated net profit of INR 5.87 million, down nearly 52% on year from INR 12.28 million. The bottom line was way below the estimated INR 45.50 million.

The company's consolidated revenue from operations for the June quarter was INR 7.36 billion, up 12% on year from INR 6.58 billion. The top line was slightly above the consensus estimate of INR 7.22 billion. The company's other operating income rose 85% on year to INR 74.88 million. Other income fell 3% to INR 65.89 million.

Revenues for the quarter under review were driven by a robust guest count growth and an effective value strategy, the company said. Same-store sales grew 4.3%, higher than the growth rate of 0.5% in the year-ago quarter. This growth was fuelled by mid-single-digit gains in May and June.

Total expenses for the quarter rose 12% on year to INR 7.41 billion. The cost of material consumed increased 27% to INR 2.39 billion. Finance costs, employee benefits expenses, and depreciation and amortisation expenses all rose around 9%.

The company's operating earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation for the June quarter were up 11% on year to INR 946 million. The EBITDA margin was 12.9%, compared with 13% for the year-ago quarter.

Westlife Foodworld owns and operates McDonald's restaurants in West and South India. The company added five new restaurants during the June quarter, expanding to 482 outlets across 79 cities. The company's digital channels contributed to nearly 74% of sales. The McDonald's app crossed 55 million downloads, while monthly active users rose to 3.7 million.

The company approved an interim dividend of INR 0.40 per equity share and the record date is Aug. 7.

Shares of Westlife Foodworld rose sharply to an intraday high of INR 505.85 on the National Stock Exchange after the earnings were announced. The stock then gave up all gains and traded at INR 487.65 at 1520 IST, marginally down from Wednesday.  End
