MUMBAI – Under the influence of a deep depression over westcentral Chhattisgarh and adjoining Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh, extremely heavy rainfall is expected over Gujarat on Friday and Saturday, with exceptionally heavy showers likely over Gujarat region on Friday, the India Meteorological Department said, while issuing a red alert for this. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

 

The presence of the deep depression is also likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy showers over central Maharashtra till Friday, for which the department has issued a red alert. An offshore trough runs from south Gujarat to north Kerala. This weather system is also expected to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Konkan and Goa till Friday, the department said. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are seen over multiple parts of west India till Monday.

 

The monsoon trough lies south of its normal position, while an east-west shear zone runs across the eastern to western parts of the country, across central and adjoining north peninsular India. The deep depression is expected to weaken gradually into a depression in the next 12 hours, the weather bureau said. A western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation lies over north Haryana.

 

The combination of these weather systems is expected to cause very heavy showers over parts of east Rajasthan and Punjab till Friday, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also expected over several parts of northwest India till Wednesday, the bureau said.

 

These weather systems are also likely to trigger very heavy rainfall over parts of west Madhya Pradesh till Friday, while heavy showers are expected to continue over multiple parts of central India till Wednesday.

 

In east and northeast India, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from Sunday to Tuesday and Arunachal Pradesh till Friday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely to persist over most parts of east and northeast India till Wednesday.

 

The offshore trough running from south Gujarat to north Kerala is expected to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Kerala and Karnataka till Saturday, the department said. Strong surface winds are seen over parts of Kerala and Lakshadweep till Sunday and over parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh till Monday. Heavy showers are likely over parts of Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry till Saturday, over Kerala on Sunday, over north interior Karnataka on Saturday, and over Telangana till Friday.  End
