MUMBAI – Piramal Pharma Ltd. Wednesday reported a net loss for the June quarter despite an increase in revenues. The company's net loss narrowed from the year-ago quarter as revenues rose smartly. The company's net loss for the quarter was lower than the Street's expectations while revenue beat the Street view.
The company's consolidated net loss for the June quarter narrowed to INR 693.90 million from INR 817 million in the year-ago quarter. Analysts' had estimated the company's net loss at INR 1.07 billion. The company's revenue from operations rose over 17% on year to INR 22.70 billion for the quarter from INR 19.34 billion in the year-ago quarter, beating the Street's estimate of INR 21.17 billion. Sequentially, revenue from operations was down around 18%. The company's other income rose 53% on year to INR 894.10 million for the quarter.
The company's total expenses for the June quarter rose 13% on year to INR 23.86 billion from INR 21.10 billion in the year-ago quarter. Sequentially, the company's total expenses fell 8%. The company's cost of materials consumed rose 38% on year to INR 7.25 billion. The company's purchases of stock-in-trade rose nearly 23% on year to INR 4.20 billion. The company's employee benefits expense rose over 9% to INR 6.76 billion. The company paid INR 619.3 million tax in the June quarter, significantly higher than INR 26.8 million in the year-ago quarter.
Piramal Pharma's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation for the June quarter rose nearly 73% on year to INR 2.85 billion from INR 1.65 billion in the year-ago quarter. The company's EBITDA margin for the quarter expanded to 12.5% from 8.5% in the year-ago quarter.
The company's EBITDA margin expansion in the June quarter was driven by improved operating leverage and execution. The company's operating performance for the June quarter improved with higher capacity utilisation, operating leverage, and pricing.
The company's revenue growth in the June quarter was driven by strong performance in all its three businesses. The company's revenue from the contract development and manufacturing organisation segment rose 19% on year to INR 11.87 billion for the June quarter. The company's revenue from the complex hospital generics segment rose 17% on year to 7.43 billion. The company's revenue from the consumer healthcare segment rose 15% to INR 3.47 billion for the June quarter.
Wednesday, shares of Piramal Pharma closed at INR 195.68 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, up over 1% from Tuesday. The company disclosed its earnings after market hours. End
